I see this alot. You are sold a big fancy website that frankly has cost you a fortune and has taken soo much time and effort and yet years sometimes some only months later it already feels like it’s gathering dust, you’ve lost heart and interest and you’ve moved on to trying something else to get the sales and leads in.
Or the other side of the coin is that when you started out you really didn’t have the money for anything flash so got something online for as little money as possible, and you can’t bear to look at it because it doesn’t represent your business any more and in any way your business has developed and it doesn’t even represent you anymore.
So here’s a home truth for you. To get the e-commerce sales you want it’s not about a quick launch of a telephone directory style website that spews information at everyone and then sitting back and hoping for the best. Sorry to break it to you!
It’s not all bad news. You can fix it and turn your website from a passive expense to a lead/sales generating asset.
The first step is to understand who your customer is, and what you can help them with. Then reassess the purpose of your website? What do you want it to do – get sales or leads or both. Then work out how the customer will do that on your website.
It really does require regular action with regards to tracking and updating to keep it operating in top gear so it can help you reach your business goals. And I’m sorry but that website that was built years ago by your brother/Aunty/son’s friend/nephew just to get you a shop window online really isn’t going to cut the mustard!
Keeping your website looking fresh and working in top gear really is what the customer wants, will definitely stop the dust gathering and will leave you seeing great value from your website.
Remember, be pro-active not reactive and you will see the results you really want.
